Stages - Blue Heron in Flight

Below you we see the various stages of my painting as I go through the process of creating this piece. I also will provide comments and my thoughts during a particular stage. If you are a fellow artist, and you have any questions and/or comments, please do not hesitate to drop me a line.

Blue Heron
9 x 12 Oil on Panel

This painting came from a reference photo from one of my friends – Thanks Cat! She took the photo while visiting Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. I really liked the colors. I did move the reflection of the heron in the water, and added more of it that was not in the photo.

Stage 1

Completed the sketch on the panel and underpainting. Will begin working on the background and water before moving onto the heron.

Stage 2

Completed the background details of the trees, and started to work on the glazes for the water. I applied a dark green glaze. The final glaze will be a light grey/blue.
